Who Is Walk & Talk Therapy For?

What Is Walk & Talk Therapy?

Walk & Talk therapy in Brampton is a form of outdoor psychotherapy where therapeutic conversation happens while walking, pausing, or just sitting in nature. Beautifully combining talk therapy with the restorative benefits of being outside, supporting emotional healing in a grounded and embodied way.

Rather than sitting face-to-face in a room, the forward motion as we move side-by-side, can reduce pressure, foster ease of expression, and make space for deeper insight.

Is Walk & Talk Therapy Effective?

Research shows the profound benefits that spending time in nature can have:

  • lower stress and anxiety

  • boost emotional clarity and mood

  • increase creativity and problem-solving

  • reduce mental rumination

  • support a stronger therapeutic alliance through shared experience outdoors

These benefits aren’t just anecdotal; studies in environmental psychology and ecotherapy support that nature influences mental well-being in measurable ways. (APA.ORG)

What Are the Benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy?

Supports Emotional Expression

Side-by-side forward movement makes opening up feel more natural for many people, especially for those uncomfortable with traditional therapy settings.

Nature becomes an active part of your inner processing, as you can pause under a tree, breathe with fresh air, and reflect in a grounded environment.

The nature of the outdoors means that foresight and precautions are taken to maintain this cornerstone of confidentiality, when taking therapy sessions outside. We revisit these before the start of each session and plan accordingly.

What Happens During a Walk & Talk Therapy Session?
A Walk & Talk therapy session involves professional counselling that takes place outdoors, either while walking at a gentle pace or sitting in a natural setting. Sessions begin much like traditional therapy, with space to check in, explore what’s present for you, and work toward your goals. The outdoor environment often supports a more relaxed and open conversation, allowing thoughts and emotions to surface naturally while remaining grounded and supported.

Do We Walk the Entire Time During Walk & Talk Therapy?
No, Walk & Talk therapy is flexible and adapts to what feels most supportive for you. Some sessions involve walking side by side, while others may include pausing to sit under a tree, stand quietly, or remain stationary for part or all of the session. The focus is not on movement for its own sake, but on creating a setting that supports reflection, regulation, and meaningful conversation.

Is Outdoor Therapy Ethical and Professional?
The same ethical established guidelines that are part of my practice indoors extend to Walk and talk therapy sessions. Client safety, confidentiality, informed consent and right to self determination. And can be a fantastic element to your treatment plan. It does offer some unique challenges in regards to the element of privacy translating to public places, but this is navigated through precautions and planning.

What Should I Wear to a Walk & Talk Therapy Session?
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear are recommended for Walk & Talk therapy sessions. You don’t need special gear or athletic clothing, just something that allows you to feel at ease and present during our time together. Dressing in layers is often helpful, especially during cooler months or changing weather conditions.

Why Does Nature Support Emotional Healing?
Nature supports emotional healing by helping regulate the nervous system and gently bringing awareness back to the present moment. Natural environments tend to reduce mental noise and soften emotional intensity, making it easier to reflect, process, and gain perspective. Being outdoors can also foster a sense of connection, stability, and grounding that supports therapeutic work.

How Does Being Outdoors Affect Mental Health?
Being outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, support mood regulation, and improve emotional clarity. Exposure to natural light, fresh air, and green spaces can calm the body while supporting focus and openness. For many people, outdoor settings feel less clinical and more human, which can make engaging in therapy feel more accessible and less intimidating.

Why Movement Can Support Emotional Processing
Gentle movement can support emotional processing by helping the body release tension and supporting the natural flow of thoughts and feelings. Walking side by side often reduces the intensity of face-to-face conversation, allowing emotions to emerge with less pressure. Movement can also help shift stuck patterns, making space for insight, regulation, and forward momentum.
